Understanding Tinnitus and How Audiology Can Help

10 December 2025
Tinnitus is the perception of sound such as ringing, buzzing, humming, or hissing when no external sound is present. It’s a very common experience; around one in three Australians have had tinnitus at some point in their lives, and about one in six live with it constantly.

Tinnitus is often linked to hearing loss, wax build-up, noise exposure, or stress and fatigue. Some medications or additions to your diet may even be a contributing factor. In most cases it is not a sign of anything serious, though a professional assessment is important to rule out underlying issues.

It can be unsettling to search online and see frightening information, but the good news is that there is a lot that can be done to help. No one should leave an audiology appointment feeling like they are at the end of the road with help for their tinnitus.

The first step is a comprehensive assessment, including a full hearing test, tinnitus questionnaires, and brief counselling to guide the next steps. If you’re experiencing tinnitus, get in touch to book a hearing assessment or feel free to call or email with any questions.
