Why Children in Speech Therapy Should Have a Hearing Test

22 October 2025
Speech and hearing are closely linked, which is why children in speech therapy are often referred for a hearing assessment.

Even mild or fluctuating hearing issues can affect how a child hears speech sounds, learns new words, and develops clear pronunciation. Conditions such as undiagnosed hearing loss, middle ear fluid (glue ear), or blocked ears from wax can all impact progress in speech therapy.

As audiologists, we work closely with speech therapists to ensure children receive comprehensive, holistic care. It’s common for allied health professionals, including GPs, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, ENTs, maternal and child health nurses, and optometrists to collaborate so families get the support they need.

With wait times for speech therapy often quite long, arranging a hearing test early is an easy and proactive step. At Southern Hearing Care, I provide gentle, tailored and age-appropriate hearing assessments for children from 9 months old. This helps ensure every child begins therapy with the best foundation for success.
